Airline faced heavy criticism for having an 'all 2SLGBTQIA+ crew'

Air Canada’s Embrace of Diversity Stirs Mixed Reactions

Air Canada recently revealed a new video titled “Air Canada: Pride in Every Role,” which is, I suppose, an important step in the airline’s Diversity and Inclusion initiatives. It appears that this project has reached a notable moment in its mission to promote diversity, but it has also sparked some serious debate.

On June 2, the airline celebrated Pride by announcing that an entire flight crew would consist of members from the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. The captain mentioned in the cockpit, “We’re the first to do it—now that this one letter has been added so far in Canada, let’s straighten it out.” This definitely puts Air Canada at the forefront of such initiatives in the country.

In the video, various crew members proudly showcased their transgender pride flags, discussing their efforts towards creating a more inclusive flying experience. One employee particularly emphasized this milestone, stating, “We are proud to announce that today’s flight features all our first 2SLGBTQIA+ crews to celebrate inclusion and diversity.”

But, like, not everyone is on board with this approach. Air Canada’s social media platforms were flooded with criticism, to the point where they disabled comments. One user on X questioned: “How does sexual orientation affect flights? I really want to understand why airlines are focusing on this.” Another user echoed similar frustrations, stating, “It’s ridiculous—capable employees are what matter, not personal lives.”

Interestingly, even on YouTube, where comments remained, many voiced their dissatisfaction. One top comment noted, “Just do your job. People don’t care about your personal preferences.” Another user remarked that the initiative seemed like a distraction from the airline’s service issues.

Speaking of service, Air Canada’s rankings have not been great. It stood as the ninth-worst airline in North America for on-time performance in 2024 and was also labeled the worst airline for customer satisfaction as recently as 2017.

Some commentators, like John F. Trent, editor of Fandom Pulse, view Air Canada’s push for diversity as virtue signaling. He asserted that the company seems keen on normalizing certain “lifestyles” and that this might not sit well with everyone. “It’s become pretty apparent that they are trying to push an ideology, and frankly, many of us see it as problematic.” This perspective adds a layer of complexity to the conversation, revealing that not everyone celebrates these initiatives.
