One airman was killed and five soldiers were injured in a vehicle crash at an air force base in Montana on Saturday, authorities said.
Four airmen, including the service member who fell, were injured in the initial crash, and two other airmen who responded to the scene were also injured, Malmstrom Air Force Base said in a news release.
The five injured pilots were transported to a nearby hospital. The deceased pilot was pronounced dead at the scene and has not been identified pending notification of his family.
“Our Airmen are all incredible and valuable members of the team,” Col. Dan Voorhees, 341st Missile Wing commander, said in a statement. “We mourn the loss of our teammates and require time for those injured to recover physically and mentally.”
“Our focus right now is making sure everyone at Team Malmstrom has the support they need to get through this difficult time.”
The cause of the crash is currently under investigation.
The base was established during World War II and is located in Great Falls, about 90 miles from the state capital of Helena.

Elected members across Montana mourned the serviceman’s death over the weekend.
“Susan and I join the men and women of Malmstrom Air Force Base in mourning the loss of the Airman who was tragically killed in a traffic accident this weekend,” said Montana Governor Greg Gianforte. He said in a statement.
“I am saddened to learn that one of our brave Airmen has been lost in an accident at Malmstrom Air Force Base,” said Senator Jon Tester. He said in a statement.
“Our hearts go out to the Malmstrom community and the affected family. We mourn his loss and pray for a speedy recovery for those injured.”
