Airplane Slides Off Runway and Plunges into Oregon Bay During Troubled Landing!

Five individuals have been rescued and are in recovery after a small private aircraft skidded off the runway at an Oregon airport into an adjacent bay.

The Regional Airport in Southwest Oregon (OTH) reported that it veered off runway 23, which is somewhat surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, during an early morning landing on Monday.

Officials stated that the 2019 HA-420 was preparing to land shortly after 6am.

Authorities noted the plane was approximately 100 feet from the underwater runway’s eastern boundary.

Emergency dispatchers were alerted and responded promptly to initiate rescue operations, authorities stated.

The emergency response teams on-site comprised OTH aircraft rescue personnel, firefighters from Coos Bay and North Bend Fire Stations, North Bend Police Department, and the Coos County Sheriff’s Office.

Photos reveal an aircraft submerged as rescuers worked to assist the pilots and passengers safely.

Officials reported that the pilot and four passengers were successfully rescued from the aircraft and taken to a local hospital. Their current conditions remain undisclosed, according to the airport.

Authorities have stated that the National Traffic Safety Board (NTSB) has been notified and permitted rescue teams to retrieve the small aircraft from the water.

The aircraft will be secured at a location near the runway where the inquiry regarding the incident is taking place while the event continues.

“This is an ongoing incident. Information will be made available to the public as it arises,” the airport posted on its Facebook page.

The airport announced a halt to commercial air services for approximately two hours for United Express, which has now resumed.

Skywest Flight 5509 experienced a delay, but the airport confirmed it is set to arrive at OTH at 2:14pm on Monday.

The North Bend, Oregon airport provides seasonal year-round commercial air routes to San Francisco, California, and Denver, Colorado, as indicated in its Facebook page description.
