AirTrain Fare Reduction for Summer Travelers

Travelers in and out of New York City will experience a pleasant surprise this summer with reduced fares for the AirTrain service to John F. Kennedy International Airport.

In response to expected traffic congestion during the summer months, fares have been cut by 50%, dropping from $8.50 to $4.25. This promotion began on June 30 and will last until September 1, which is Labor Day.

This fare reduction applies to both Jamaica and Howard Beach stations, and passengers can pay using OMNY or Metro cards. Some travelers find the AirTrain less than convenient, especially when juggling luggage. However, the discounted fares might make them reconsider their transportation options during peak travel times.

Interestingly, for the second consecutive summer, the Port Authority anticipates JFK will see a record-breaking 18.3 million travelers.

Port Director Kevin O’Toole mentioned that this summer will also mark a heavy period of construction at JFK, which is undergoing a massive $19 billion renovation—believed to be the largest airport redevelopment in the U.S.

Coming up, numerous terminals will be experiencing roadwork and construction updates, notably at Terminals 1, 4, 6, and 8.

“We’re urging travelers to utilize public transport to the airport, and the discounted AirTrain fares are part of our efforts to ensure people can travel efficiently,” O’Toole stated. “Sure, there might be some temporary hassles, but it’s all part of the long-term improvements that will benefit our community for years to come.”

For those opting to drive to the airport, there are recommendations to arrive three hours early due to limited parking availability. It’s also advised to book parking spaces in advance.

Additionally, ride-sharing users like Uber and Lyft will need to pick up passengers from a designated remote lot to help ease congestion. To assist, a complimentary shuttle service will transport travelers to this parking area.
