Akon’s Futuristic City Project Faces Major Setbacks

In 2020, musician Akon took a bold step to realize a dream of building a futuristic city inspired by his Senegalese roots. He announced an ambitious $6 billion initiative called Akon City, designed to span 2,000 acres, featuring state-of-the-art infrastructure and renewable energy solutions.

The plan included various facilities, like resorts, condominiums, and a stadium, with the city set to utilize Akon’s own cryptocurrency, “Akaine.” As excitement built, it felt like a significant cultural moment, especially after the success of the 2018 film “Black Panther,” which Akon said signaled hope for African development.

Reflecting on the film’s impact, Akon remarked, “God allowed this film to succeed… this is possible in Africa,” believing it would inspire similar successes on the continent.

Fast-forward five years, and the situation has soured considerably. By mid-2024, Senegal’s Tourism Commission essentially issued Akon an ultimatum: either initiate substantial construction work or relinquish the land for other projects. Interestingly, Akon maintained that he had a good rapport with Senegalese authorities and insisted that the project was progressing.

Nevertheless, developments like an “African Restaurant” and “African Open Bazaar” failed to salvage the project’s prospects. This week, Senegal’s Tourism Bureau officially announced the closure of Akon City, bringing the once-promising vision to a grinding halt.

Serigne Mamadou Mboup, head of the Senegal Tourism Board, stated, “The Akon City project is no longer present.” He added that Akon acknowledged the project’s mismanagement, saying, “I’m fully responsible for that.”

While Senegalese officials indicated that land development might continue, plans will be modified and scaled back. The country, set to host the 2026 Youth Olympics, is eager to see progress on various initiatives.

Local residents expressed their disillusionment, noting the area was still largely empty fields grazed by goats as of late 2022. Akon had previously pointed to high expectations around other construction projects in Africa, acknowledging that such aspirations often lead to disappointment.

Reflecting on the missteps, Akon admitted in a 2024 interview that he might have misled the public by promoting the project prematurely, despite it still being in the planning stages. He cited environmental regulations and land surveys as hurdles he had yet to overcome.

In a notable mention, Akon also reached out to international designers, even those linked to ambitious projects like Saudi Arabia’s futuristic cities, yet this collaboration hasn’t moved the needle for Akon City.

On a financial note, Akon’s Akoin cryptocurrency has seen a dramatic decline in value since peaking in February 2021. It’s now worth around $0.003, a far cry from its earlier promise, and isn’t gaining traction within Senegal’s regulatory environment.

Akon, whose full name is Aliaune Thiam, was born in St. Louis to Senegalese parents and rose to fame with hits like “Sexy Bitch,” selling millions of albums globally. While his future projects in the region are uncertain, Akon has had previous successes, including initiatives that brought solar energy to millions across Africa.
