Al Michaels really hates the flag, and he made that very clear during a broadcast of Prime Video's “Thursday Night Football.”
A total of 15 flags were thrown during the Cowboys' 20-15 victory over the Giants.
It was the loud noise in the first half that angered the legendary sports broadcaster, who decided to vent his frustration at several points during the match.
“You know, June 14th is apparently known as Flag Day here,” Michaels joked at one point earlier in the broadcast.
“There's one more flag. There's two more flags in the backfield. There's no more clothesline left. … And there's going to be any number of calls.” When the sentence was announced, I raised my voice.
Michaels, 79, didn't just lash out at officials for the number of penalty flags he threw.
At halftime, Michaels continued to take jabs at the staff, at one point telling analyst Kirk Herbstreit, “Apart from the fact that the game was completely out of rhythm because of the flag movement,'' What do you think?'' he asked.
And in the third quarter, after the referee called the first penalty with 5 minutes, 16 seconds left, he commented: Amazingly, it's the first of the quarter. ”
In the first 30 minutes, the referees called a combined 12 penalties between the Giants and Cowboys, including Dallas' first score, and had several flags raised.
The Giants fell to 1-3 on the season with the loss to the Cowboys, despite a decent showing from quarterback Daniel Jones, who threw for 281 yards.
Big Blue failed to score a touchdown in the game and relied solely on the legs of Greg Joseph for his 15 points Thursday night.
