MLB Season’s Final Weekend
The 2025 Major League Baseball season kicks off its final weekend today.
At this point, three teams are battling for two spots in the American League, while two teams are in contention for the last spot in the National League. This leaves many division titles and playoff seeds still up for grabs.
One of the most intriguing stories heading into the weekend involves the Guardians in Cleveland. Back in July, they were trailing by a hefty 15.5 games in the AL Central. However, now, they find themselves tied with the Detroit Tigers, holding a crucial tiebreaker over them.
This creates a scenario where the Guardians could achieve one of the biggest comebacks in MLB history this weekend.
Let’s take a look at the playoff implications surrounding the Texas Rangers tonight.
Rangers Playoff Outlook
The Texas Rangers bring an 81-79 record into Saturday’s game, but they’ve already been eliminated from playoff contention.
Guardians Playoff Possibilities
As mentioned earlier, the Guardians were sitting 15.5 games back in the AL Central back in July, but now they head into the weekend tied with the Tigers in the division. This turnaround is mainly thanks to winning the season series against Detroit.
Despite this, the Guardians haven’t secured a playoff spot yet. However, they do control their own fate in pursuit of one.
The AL Central title has two key figures. Essentially, any combination of Guardians wins and Tigers losses totaling two will clinch the AL Central title. So, if the Tigers lose to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday and the Guardians beat the Rangers tonight, Cleveland will be the AL Central Champion. Alternatively, if the Guardians win their last two games, they take the division, no matter how the Tigers perform.
The route to a wild card spot for Cleveland is even simpler. There, they have just one key figure to keep in mind. With the tiebreaker favoring the Guardians against the Houston Astros, a win over the Rangers or an Astros loss to the Angels in Los Angeles would guarantee Cleveland at least a wild card playoff spot.
However, the Guardians can only secure a wildcard place in sixth as they can’t surpass the Boston Red Sox in the standings.
