Investigation into Nolan Wells’ Death Intensifies
Pastor Al Sharpton has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the tragic death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells from Mississippi. On Wednesday, attorney Ben Crump is expected to unveil preliminary findings from an independent autopsy, potentially shedding some light on the circumstances surrounding Wells’ mysterious demise.
Crump’s press conference will take place at the NAACP National Convention in Chicago, where he will be joined by Wells’ parents, Christine and Elmore Wonsley. The family’s legal team will also be revealing the initial findings from their independent investigation.
This announcement follows a recent resolution from the NAACP urging local, state, and federal authorities, including the U.S. Department of Justice, to conduct a comprehensive and transparent inquiry into Wells’ death.
Wells’ case gained renewed attention after TMZ released footage allegedly recorded during a July 4 rally on Horn Island. In this video, several boats and people are visible, with TMZ identifying one individual as Wells. However, the authenticity and timing of the footage remain unverified by Fox News Digital.
On July 4, Wells went missing after celebrating Independence Day with friends on a boat trip to Horn Island, a barrier island off the Mississippi coast. Search teams looked for him for two days, and on July 6, his body was discovered near the island’s northwest tip. Authorities have yet to disclose the cause or manner of death, and the investigation is ongoing.
No official autopsy results have been released so far. Crump’s announcement will provide the first independent medical findings available to the public.
The case has drawn national attention, rallying support from various civil rights leaders and celebrities, including Crump, Sharpton, former NFL player Colin Kaepernick, and filmmaker Tyler Perry.
Both Sharpton and Crump have emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation while also urging caution against jumping to conclusions about the circumstances of Wells’ death.
At Wells’ funeral, Sharpton expressed, “I can’t say it was racist, but I can’t say it wasn’t either.” He urged for patience until all evidence is thoroughly examined.
Sharpton has also raised questions regarding the investigation, such as why Wells’ cell phone and keys were found with his friends and why authorities were not contacted immediately after he was reported missing.
During the funeral service, Sharpton mentioned that someone present at the rally likely knows what happened. He urged those with information to come forward, reiterating the reward offer through the National Action Network.
Perry has offered to assist with funeral expenses, and Crump mentioned that the district attorney plans to submit the investigation findings to a grand jury once completed. The family continues to wait for the results of the independent autopsy.
