Alabama AD Greg Byrne hints at major change after CFP snub

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne hinted at changes to how the non-conference schedule will be handled going forward after the Crimson Tide was eliminated from the College Football Playoff.

The College Football Playoff Committee chose SMU over the University of Alabama as the final bid for this year's college football postseason, which did not sit well with Byrne, who took to social media to vent his disappointment.

“While we were disappointed with the result, we felt like we were one of the best 12 teams in the country. It was a very tough schedule, but we recognized that there were two games in particular where we didn't perform as well as we could have. Masu.” In a lengthy statement about X, he wrote:

Byrne then suggested that the committee's decisions will affect the University of Alabama's game schedule, one of which is bad for the sport as a whole.

“We have said we need to see how the strength of the schedule is assessed by the CFP,” he said. “Given this result, we will need to do the following:” [assess] To be in the best position to participate in the CFP in the future, it will be important to see how many P4 non-conference games there are. That’s not good for college football.”

The decision to keep Alabama out of the playoffs means Alabama will participate in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan on Dec. 31 in Tampa, giving both schools a chance to play again for the first time since last year's Rose Bowl. It will be given to you.

According to ESPN, the University of Alabama finished this year with a record of 9 wins and 3 losses, making it the 11th strongest team in history.

SMU's strength of record ranked 15th in the nation.

College Football Playoff Chairman Warde Manuel said on ESPN's Selection Show that Alabama's come-from-behind loss played a role in his decision-making.

“We looked at the number of wins Alabama had against ranked opponents,” Manuel said. According to Sports Illustrated. “I looked at SMU's schedule and they were undefeated in the conference. Their losses were to ranked teams. I also looked at Alabama losing to an unranked team, but that's quite a debate. It was.”
