Alabama AD suggests football team will reassess non-conference schedule after missing out on CFP

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne lamented the Crimson Tide's elimination from Sunday's College Football Playoff and suggested the football program reconsider its nonconference schedule.

Byrne pointed to the strength of the Crimson Tide's schedule during the season as to why Alabama deserves to be in the playoffs as a three-loss team against a team like SMU. Mr Byrne made the claim before the rankings were revealed, but the selection committee did not respond.

This raised questions about whether strength of schedule matters to officials deciding on slots.

“We were disappointed with the result and felt we were one of the best 12 teams in the country,” Byrne wrote in X. “We have played a very tough schedule, and we recognize that there were two games in particular where we didn't perform as well as we could have.'' “

“We have said that we need to see how the strength of our schedule is assessed by the CFP.Following this result, we have said that we need to see how the strength of our schedule is assessed by the CFP. We'll have to evaluate whether only P4 non-conference games make sense.''The position of participating in the CFP is not good for college football. ”

Alabama ranked No. 11 in the penultimate release. However, they had no conference championship to play for. Had SMU beaten Clemson, the Crimson Tide might have been the team of the tournament.

College Football Playoff Selection Committee Chairman Warde Manuel explained why SMU set up the field:

We looked at SMU's schedule and they were undefeated in the conference. Their losses were against ranked teams. But we also looked at Alabama's losses to unranked teams, and it was significant.''We're focusing on strength of schedule. That's why Alabama, a three-loss team, ranks higher than other two-loss teams. ”

“But on balance, the way SMU played in that game, losing on a last-second field goal, a great Clemson win, it was a great game. In this particular case, I think SMU is still getting the nod. But that's not discounting the strength of Alabama's schedule, it's just looking at the overall work of both teams. ”
