An Alabama A&M University student was injured Monday in a shootout with campus police officers on the stairs of a dormitory, authorities said.
The shooting occurred during a routine security check in the stairwell of a campus residence hall and was “contained within minutes,” according to university and state law enforcement agencies.
“Earlier today, one person was injured in an officer-involved shooting at the Night Complex on campus,” the university said in a statement. “Authorities are containing the immediate threat as the investigation continues.”
Alabama A&M Police Chief Montrezl Payton told WAFF-TV that officers were patrolling the fifth floor of the complex when they heard gunshots coming from the floor below.

Peyton said the officer and the student exchanged gunfire several times in the stairwell, and the student was struck multiple times. The student was hospitalized, but the campus police officer was unharmed.
State and campus officials have not released any additional information about the shooting, students or campus police officers.
Students had just returned to the Huntsville campus from spring break when the shooting occurred.

“I was surprised,” one student told a local broadcaster. “I just got back from spring break and it felt like they were already doing this. We shouldn’t bring this onto campus.”

This incident is the second shooting at the Knight Complex in seven months.
The previous shooting in August resulted in an altercation that left two people injured, police said at the time. Both suspects involved in the shooting were arrested, and police said the incident was an isolated incident.

The campus of approximately 6,000 students is located in north Alabama.
