An Alabama couple who were driving home from a 30th wedding anniversary in Florida helped several motorists out of their cars after a serious accident over the weekend.
According to the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, the Caldwells were returning to Geneva, Alabama, on Saturday night after spending time in Destin, Florida, when a car passed them at high speed and struck them on County Road 185. An accident occurred in which the driver collided with another vehicle.
The couple observed the car’s headlights through their rearview mirror, then the car sped past and disappeared from view.

“After what felt like seconds, the couple came across the wreckage of what appeared to be a head-on collision. Smoke billowed from one of the involved vehicles,” the sheriff’s office wrote on Facebook. Ta.
Cardwell told his wife to call 911 and quickly recognized the car on fire as the one he had just passed.
“It doesn’t matter. This person, whoever he was, was in danger,” the sheriff’s office wrote. “As soon as Mr. Cardwell passed them at night, he ran to pull the driver out of the car, which was engulfed in flames, and to help the other driver, who was trapped in the car.”

Police and firefighters quickly arrived on the scene and freed the second driver.
“The Cardwells are heroes in our eyes. If they hadn’t stopped and helped, the driver could have died in those flames,” the sheriff’s office said. “May this remind us all of the importance of life. Slow down. Don’t take it for granted. It can be over in an instant.”
