An execution date has been set for a man convicted of killing a delivery driver at a northeastern Alabama ATM in 1998.
Governor Kay Ivey announced Thursday that Keith Edmond Gavin, 64, will be executed by lethal injection within 30 hours from midnight July 18th to 6am July 19th.
Her announcement came a week after the state Supreme Court approved the death penalty.

Gavin was convicted of capital murder in the March 6, 1998 shooting death of William Clayton Jr. in Center.
According to local media outlet AL.com, Clayton, who was a delivery driver, was collecting money at an ATM to take to his wife for dinner when Gavin shot him and forced him into his van during an attempted robbery. He reportedly drove away in a stolen car. .
Investigators from the District Attorney’s Office happened to be nearby when the shooting occurred and began tracking the van, AL.com reported. At one point, Gavin stopped the van and got out of his vehicle to fire at investigators, then continued to flee.
Clayton was taken into custody immediately and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Gavin was identified as the suspect in Clayton’s death by two witnesses: the investigator he shot and his cousin, who was with him seconds before he shot Clayton.
In 1999, a jury voted 10-2 to sentence Gavin to death. This is Clayton’s second murder conviction, as he served 17 years of a 34-year sentence in Illinois and was later paroled shortly before his death, AL.com reported.

Alabama also has scheduled an execution date for Jamie Mills, who was convicted of murdering a couple during a robbery in 2004. Mills is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection on May 30, according to the Associated Press.
