Alabama falls to No. 10 in the newest College Football Playoff standings

Latest College Football Playoff Rankings Update

In the most recent College Football Playoff rankings, the top three teams remain unchanged. However, the previous fourth-place team experienced a significant setback, slipping off the rankings entirely.

The Alabama Crimson Tide faced a close 23-21 defeat at home against the Oklahoma Sooners, which prompted the selection committee to drop them from fourth to tenth place.

On a more positive note, the Georgia Bulldogs have climbed from No. 5 in the initial rankings to No. 4.

Ohio State, Indiana, and Texas A&M continue to hold positions one through three, which means each would get a bye if the playoffs commenced today.

It’s worth noting that it’s a bit surprising to see Alabama ranked lower than the No. 9 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, especially considering Notre Dame hasn’t secured any wins against teams in the top 25 this season, whereas Alabama’s record stands at 4-1.

Meanwhile, Texas Tech has ascended to No. 5, with Ole Miss, Oregon, and Oklahoma State following suit. Oklahoma State notably moved up to eighth after a significant victory on the road in Tuscaloosa.

Key Insights from the Second CFP Rankings Announcement

Looking beyond the top ten, BYU holds the eleventh spot, trailed by Utah, Miami, Vanderbilt, and USC in the top 15. The University of Miami, in particular, enjoyed a successful weekend, trouncing North Carolina State 41-7 and improving their ranking by two spots.

Nonetheless, Miami’s supporters might be feeling a bit frustrated, as they trail Notre Dame by four games despite both teams sharing an 8-2 historical record and Miami having previously won against the Fighting Irish this season.

Miami head coach Mario Cristobal emphasized that head-to-head matchups should be prioritized. He noted, “That has always been and always will be the number one factor,” referring to the importance of such matches in the rankings.

However, a debate arises over how Miami ended up with two losses while Notre Dame continues to be ahead. Notre Dame did lose against ranked teams, namely Miami and Texas, while Miami faced setbacks against unranked Louisville and SMU.

After suffering a 35-10 loss to Georgia State, the Texas Longhorns have moved to the 17th position, improving their overall record to 7-3. They stand just behind Georgia Tech at No. 16, followed by Michigan State, Virginia, and Tennessee.

As for the teams rounding out the top 25, Illinois, Missouri, Houston, Tulane, and Arizona State fill those spots respectively.

As always, the top five conference champion teams will join the 12-team playoff field this season. It’s crucial to remember that this model operates on a straight-seeding basis rather than automatically granting byes to the winners of Power 4 conferences.

With only two weeks left in the regular season, followed by conference championships, the playoff picture is starting to take shape.
