Recently, a fishing team at the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo reeled in a massive bull shark, setting a new state record.

The Bon Secour butcher team from the Orca caught the 494.5 pound monster. in of tDauphin Island Tournament.

“When we have a catch like this come to our weigh station, it’s an exciting moment for everyone involved. We all feel a part of the catch,” a representative for the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo told Fox News Digital.

The team consisted of Captain Adam Lyons, First Mate Tommy “Tuna Bowyer”, Captain David Stiller “Shark Killer” and crewman Michael Maguire.

“When engaging an animal this large, heavy equipment and good boat piloting are key,” Capt. Adam Lyons told Fox News Digital in an email.

“Setting up a line in the water can be dangerous, so you want to avoid anything that could damage the line, such as the boat itself. Essentially, you want to tire out the shark long enough to safely deploy a tail line. If you can get a hold of the shark’s tail, it’s game over for the shark.”

“The boat was equipped with a winch typically used in commercial fishing so it was relatively easy to haul the shark out. It was a combination of the anglers’ experience, the captain’s work and patience that won the day,” Lyons added.

This group of men won the Gulf Coast Hauling & Construction Bull Shark Jackpot and were awarded $6,000.

“It’s really awesome to see anglers reel in the catch of a lifetime and break rodeo and state records,” Matt Glass, chairman of the 91st Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo, told Fox News Digital.

The rodeo was founded in 1929 and is the world’s largest fishing tournament, attracting more than 4,000 anglers and 75,000 spectators, according to the event’s website.
