Alabama Governor Kay Ivey Hospitalized
Alabama Governor Kay Ivey was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday after a minor procedure to remove fluid compressing her lungs, according to her office. The governor, who is 81 years old, will be monitored at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery for a few days as a precaution.
The fluid was found during a doctor’s visit after Ivey experienced some discomfort on her left side and had been feeling a bit short of breath lately. A statement explained, “Over the past three weeks, Governor Kay Ivey felt some discomfort on the left side. After noticing the pain and some shortness of breath, she decided to consult her GP today.”
Although these medical issues weren’t considered urgent, Ivey aimed to address them quickly to ensure her recovery before the state’s legislative session concludes in 2026. “It wasn’t an emergency, but Governor Ivey wanted to complete the process as soon as possible,” the statement noted.
Her office has not specified how long she will remain hospitalized, but a spokesperson mentioned, “We have been in contact with Governor Ivey, and she is determined to recover swiftly.”
Support has poured in from colleagues in Alabama and beyond. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall expressed appreciation for the care Ivey is receiving and joined many citizens in wishing her a speedy recovery. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp shared, “Prayers are with her, and we know she will navigate through this.” It seems there’s a collective hope for her quick return to health.
In a past health battle in 2019, Ivey had radiation treatment for lung cancer, which was later deemed successful. As it stands, she is term-limited and won’t be running for re-election this year.
