Alabama shooting at Tuskegee University homecoming leaves 1 dead, several hurt

Authorities have arrested a suspect in a Sunday morning shooting near the campus of Tuskegee University in Alabama that left one person dead and more than a dozen injured.

The Alabama Department of Law Enforcement announced Sunday that Jaquez Myrick, 25, was arrested and charged with federal charges of possessing a machine gun.

ALEA said Myrick was found in possession of a handgun with a machine gun conversion device. Myrick was found on the Tuskegee University campus after leaving the scene of the shooting, ALEA said.

Police said 12 of the 16 people injured were shot.

All classes are canceled Monday as law enforcement continues to “process the scene,” and grief counselors will be available to students in the chapel on Monday, according to a statement from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on X. That's what it means.

A Tuskegee University spokesperson confirmed to Fox News Digital that “a non-university person was killed” in a shooting on campus early Sunday morning.

“The individual's parents have been notified. Several other people, including a Tuskegee University student, were injured and are being treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery,” the statement continued. Ta. “Emergency response units and campus and local law enforcement secured the scene. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is conducting an active investigation.”
