Tragic Death of Alabama Sports Reporter and Husband

An Alabama sports reporter, along with her husband, has tragically died from gunshot wounds in what authorities are identifying as a murder-suicide incident. The couple, Christina Chambers, a former WBRC6 sports reporter, and Johnny Rimes, were found in their parents’ home in Hoover around 9 a.m. on a Tuesday morning.

According to police, a family member called 911 after discovering them unresponsive. Upon arrival, officers found the couple, both suffering from gunshot wounds, and they were pronounced dead at the scene. Thankfully, their 3-year-old child was also in the house but unharmed.

While the investigation continues, police indicated that there is no ongoing threat to the public due to the nature of the situation. The Hoover Police Department did not immediately respond to requests for more information.

Christina Chambers joined WBRC in 2015, becoming a beloved presence on the “Sideline” program, which covers local sports. She even anchored the marathon while she was participating in it. After stepping away from full-time reporting in July 2021 to teach, she remained involved with the station on a freelance basis during the football season. In her teaching role at Thompson High School, Chambers received accolades including 2024 Advisor of the Year from the Alabama Scholastic Press Association. Under her guidance, her students achieved notable success in journalism competitions.

Chambers additionally worked in corporate communications for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. A spokesperson for the company expressed profound sadness and offered condolences to her family. Chambers was remembered as a beacon of warmth and inspiration to her colleagues.

Sen. Katie Boyd Britt also expressed her condolences, calling the news tragic and asking everyone to keep Chambers’ friends and family in their thoughts and prayers. Former colleagues described her as one of the kindest people, highlighting her love for running, her son, and life in general. Jae Jae Pruitt, a news anchor, noted how grateful he was to have shared a heartfelt moment with her just a week prior.
