Investigation into Coastal Wetland Changes in Albania
Albania’s anti-corruption prosecutor’s office is looking into alterations made to the protection status of a coastal wetland, where a luxury resort project associated with Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former U.S. President Donald Trump, has led to significant protests. This information comes from Politico.
The Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SPAK) has initiated an investigation regarding the modifications in the Vjosa Narta reserve in Zvernec, essential as it provides a habitat for nesting flamingos, Mediterranean monk seals, and sea turtles, according to the same report.
In the past year, Jared Kushner has openly shared plans for his firm, Affinity Partners, aiming to develop high-end tourism ventures in Albania, particularly in regions like Svernets. He and his wife, Ivanka Trump, even visited the area earlier this year.
Recently, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed to Politico that negotiations continue between the government and Kushner regarding the project, which aims to feature around 10,000 hotel rooms and villas.
Prime Minister Rama expressed his ambition to transform Albania into a sought-after destination in the region, and this project is viewed as a critical part of that strategy.
Public protests in Albania started in May after barbed wire fences were installed around the proposed construction site, essentially blocking beach access for locals and visitors. On Sunday, demonstrators convened outside government structures, pushing for the project’s halt and demanding Prime Minister Rama’s resignation.
In the wake of these protests, videos surfaced showing private security personnel clashing with protesters, with some instances of aggression reported, including assaults and threats aimed at those attempting to dismantle the fences and hinder construction efforts.
In light of these events, the licenses of two private security firms were revoked. Additionally, about 15 protestors faced charges, and the local police chief lost his position.
