Albanian Prime Minister Hosts European Leaders
Albanian Prime Minister Eddie Rama welcomed European leaders on Friday. Amidst discussions, he greeted Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and shared warm moments with French President Emmanuel Macron, bringing a sense of camaraderie to the meeting.
Just a few days after winning a fourth term, Rama emphasized his commitment to bringing Albania into the EU by 2030. He expressed excitement about hosting fellow leaders from various nations, basking in his electoral victory.
Standing at an impressive height of two meters (6 feet 7 inches), Rama engaged warmly with over 40 leaders attending the European Political Community (EPC) meetings. “I will say hello to you in a place where everything in Europe comes today, and the whole world sees,” he mentioned via Instagram prior to the event.
The gathering kicked off with Rama humorously spinning a navy blue umbrella on the bright red carpet, complemented by a star-shaped EPC logo on his tie and trademark sneakers. When Meloni arrived, he often knelt down, particularly when introducing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the opera building where discussions were taking place.
Rama affectionately referred to Macron as the “King of the Sun” as they shared a hug before entering the venue, reinforcing their bond. He also quipped about the British delegation, highlighting how rain had graced them unexpectedly, referencing research from the European Institute of Meteorological Prediction.
Welcoming Atmosphere
The EPC, conceived by Macron post-Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, aims to unite EU members and 20 additional countries. The situation in Ukraine was a major topic of the gathering, especially framed against ongoing discussions between Russian and Ukrainian officials in Istanbul, alongside immigration issues.
Before the formal consultations commenced, Rama took the opportunity to express his affection for Europe. “It’s true that I am the tallest of them all, but I lead a country that is one of the smallest. For us, it’s already a great honor to have the opportunity to hold this summit,” he stated, sharing a light moment with attendees that elicited laughter and smiles.
The atmosphere was further lightened when an AI-generated projection of each leader as infants appeared on a large screen, adding a whimsical touch to the proceedings.
