Former MLS winger Albers Ellis suffered a horrific head injury during a match in France over the weekend and was placed in a medically induced coma following surgery.
Ellis, who plays for Ligue 2 side Bordeaux, is injured. Collision with Guingamp defender Donatian Gomis Roughly 40 seconds into Saturday night’s match at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux.
The 28-year-old was immediately treated and taken from the field on a stretcher and taken to CHU Peregrine Hospital. The club confirmed in a statement He underwent surgery and was placed in a “protective induced coma.”
The statement also said that Ellis’ health will be monitored over the next few days, but that no definitive updates on his health could be provided.

After an eight-minute delay due to injury, Bordeaux won the match 1-0, with manager Alberto Riera dedicating the win in honor of Ellis in the post ‘X’.
Midfielder Gaitan Weisbeck paid tribute to Ellis in an Instagram post, saying after the game that the players dedicated the victory to their injured teammate.
“Here we realize that things can move very quickly in life,” Weisbeck said. According to the Daily Mail. “We’re going to give him very good support. We’re going to be with him wholeheartedly and check in on him. We’ve already heard from him and now we’re going to give him very good support. Ellis is originally from Honduras and began his soccer career in his home country, before spending time at Monterrey in Mexico, Houston Dynamo in MLS and Boavista in Portugal before finally landing in Bordeaux in 2021.
He is a regular for the Honduras national team, appearing in 60 games and scoring 13 goals.
Ellis made 88 appearances and scored 34 goals during his time at Dinamo, and 60 for his current club in France.
