Alec Baldwin Reflects on Long-Term Health Issues Post-2021 Incident
Actor Alec Baldwin has recently opened up about ongoing health challenges he attributes to the tragic shooting incident involving Halina Hutchins on the set of the film Rust in 2021.
During a rehearsal, Hutchins was fatally shot when Baldwin, while practicing a gun draw, was unaware that the firearm, which was a real gun and not a prop, had live ammunition inside. This mistake, made by the film’s armorer, led to a devastating outcome as Hutchins was hit in the chest and succumbed to her injuries shortly after.
Now, four years later, Baldwin appeared on the podcast Dopey: About the Dark Comedy of Drug Addiction and shared that the incident continues to haunt him. “The people I was most worried about, the people I was most deeply concerned about, were my wife and children,” he shared.
Talking about the emotional toll, he mentioned, “The kids would see me sitting in the corner, I couldn’t even move. I went through a phase where I napped every single day for a year.”
Baldwin faced multiple trials concerning the cinematographer’s death but was never convicted. He expressed his discontent saying, “I don’t want to talk about this any further. All I want to say is that this has been extremely painful for my wife, my family, my sisters and brothers, and my co-workers. Every nerve in my body has been destroyed—mentally, financially, and professionally.”
He further reflected on how the incident altered his life, stating, “The impact it has had on my health… it feels like I’ve lost at least a decade.” Baldwin’s wife also revealed that the situation made her contemplate suicide.
He noted, “Talking about suicide and actually committing suicide are very different, and the thought of it is quite unappealing to me. Many people think about it, but very few actually act on those thoughts.”
Baldwin, who has faced scrutiny from prosecutors, alleged they were more interested in sensationalism than justice. “Thank God for a judge who called them out and said, ‘What you’re doing is reprehensible,’” Baldwin remarked.
Ultimately, Baldwin claimed that faith played a crucial role in helping him navigate this period. “Somehow I found faith in God, so I don’t have to kill myself tomorrow. Let’s wait another day,” he said.
Despite the serious events surrounding the film, Rust ended up being a financial disappointment, pulling in merely $26,000 against an $8 million budget.
