Alejandro Tosti Faces Caddie Walkout During PGA Tour Event

Alejandro Tosti found himself unexpectedly without support during a round of golf.

In a striking moment at the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Biltmore Championship Asheville, the Argentinian golfer’s caddie, Cliff Ellis, abruptly quit at the 18th hole, which was Tosti’s ninth hole of the day. Reports indicate that Ellis “dropped the bag, took off his caddie bib and walked off,” according to an insider from Golfweek.

The tension between the two had apparently been simmering since their practice round earlier in the week. Tosti, known for occasional behavioral issues during play, was caught off guard when Ellis didn’t return from a break he assumed was for a bathroom visit.

“He couldn’t keep up with eight pars in a row,” Tosti texted Golfweek, humorously adding multiple laughing emojis.

He concluded the round with a score of +1, landing tied for 99th place.

Tosti is no stranger to conflict with his caddies. In 2023, he had a memorable fallout with former caddie Ray Yoel, which resulted in a suspension from the Korn Ferry Tour due to unbecoming conduct. Earlier this year, he went viral for having his caddie don a bib that read “NEED A WIFE” at the Valspar Championship, a nod to his own romantic situation.

It appears that Tosti’s issues extend beyond just caddies; one player from the Korn Ferry Tour described him as a “Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde type.”

“I’m only a jerk Thursday through Sunday,” he reportedly said to a fellow Tour competitor in response to his behavior, explaining that those days are critically important for his earnings and he prefers not to have anyone impede that.

Tosti has acknowledged his temper and demeanor as something he struggles with. “It’s been the challenge for me my whole life, dealing with myself,” he shared in a conversation with Golfweek in 2024.

As Tosti prepares to tee off again at 1:49 p.m. on Friday, it’s uncertain who will be carrying his clubs at The Cliff at Walnut Grove for the second round.
