Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix Overview
This weekend’s Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix marks a return to the traditional race format, differing from the sprint races of the previous three seasons. Teams and drivers will participate in three regular practice sessions leading up to Saturday’s qualifying.
With the usual practice schedule, teams have the chance to use the first practice session to develop newer drivers. McLaren has opted to take advantage of this opportunity, as announced on Monday.
Alex Dunn, part of McLaren’s driver development program, is set to join the first practice session on Friday, stepping in for Randnoris. At just 19 years old, Dunn began his single-seater career in the 2021 Spanish F4 Championship, where he took third place in his debut race. He enjoyed great success in 2022, clinching 16 victories and participating in F2 Championships across the UK, UAE, and Italy, ultimately winning the British F4 title.
Now in his first year driving in F2 with Rodin Motorsports, Dunn has already achieved two feature race wins—one in Bahrain and another in Imola. He currently holds a strong position in the F2 championship standings.
“Driving in FP1 during Austria is a fantastic opportunity for me. I’m eager to get behind the wheel of the MCL39 and help the team prepare for the race weekend,” Dunn said in a statement.
“I’ve been gearing up for this session, participating in tests with my previous car, the MCL60, and spending time on the simulator. This whole experience is invaluable. I’m grateful to Zak Brown, Andrea Stella, and Alessandro Alunni Bravi for their trust in me. It’s a significant step in my growth with McLaren, and I’m genuinely excited to be a part of Team Trackside.”
“We’re thrilled to provide Alex with a chance to drive in free practice 1. It’s incredibly valuable for him to gain experience in an F1 car as part of his development. The team looks forward to working closely with him and using his insights to set up the car for the weekend. This rookie session offers a rare glimpse into the potential of future talent as they get their time in the car,” a team representative mentioned.
Alongside his F2 commitments, Dunn will also take on the role of backup and development driver for the Neom McLaren Formula E team.
