Alex Ovechkin matched NHL records for the most career goals, placing him alongside the legends, Wayne Gretzky.
Ovechkin made history when he netted his 894th goal on Friday, finding the net at the 6:13 mark during the third period.
This marked his second goal of the evening.
Ovechkin established the record in his 1,486th career game, a journey that began when he was first picked by the Capitals in the 2004 NHL Draft during the 2005-2006 season.
Ovechkin is nearing the record held by Gretzky, having scored three goals on April 2nd to achieve his 892nd goal in Carolina, the same location as the 2004 draft.
He scored goals while Gretzky was in attendance since April 2nd as the legends were joined by other NHL officials.
“Later this year, at any time, next year, he’s a phenomenal player. He’s an excellent goal scorer,” Gretzky remarked to NHL.com at the season’s start.
