Alex Rodriguez’s Family Shares Thoughts in New Documentary

In HBO’s latest documentary miniseries, “Alex vs. ARod,” the daughters of Alex Rodriguez, Natasha and Ella, delve into their personal relationships with their father, the former Yankees star.

During the second episode of the three-part series, Natasha describes herself and her dad as “social butterflies.” Ella, on the other hand, speaks candidly about the challenges of growing up in the public eye, calling it “weird.” She even expresses her discomfort with being labeled as “A-Rod’s daughter.” “I really don’t like it. In fact, I hate it,” says the 17-year-old. “People would constantly ask me, ‘Is your dad A-Rod? Is he coming here?'”

She reflects, “It made me think—he’s more than that. His name is Alex; he’s a real person.” Ella admits to feeling a bit strange about having such a prominent figure as her father, but acknowledges how much he has driven her ambition. “I think he instilled that in me. When he decides on something, he’s relentless. That goes for all three of us. A lot of my discipline comes from him,” she adds.

Natasha, a student at the University of Michigan, believes she and her father mirror each other in many ways. “We’re kind of like twins when it comes to work ethic and passion,” she shares. “We are social, but our circles are small, making us carbon copies of each other.” She goes on to say, “Alex is amazing, but your confidence comes from achievements, and he’s got plenty of those.”

The second part of “Alex vs. ARod” also features comments from Cynthia Scurtis, the girls’ mother and Rodriguez’s ex-wife. Although she skirts specifics about life with the Yankees, her remarks indicate it was a mix of excitement and challenges. “It was thrilling, but also quite tough,” Cynthia recalls. “Being on a baseball schedule isn’t always easy. And living under that level of scrutiny, especially in New York, was just… different.”

Rodriguez, who is now 50, faced intense media attention while playing for the Yankees. Cynthia continues, “The spotlight was tremendous—there were always more eyes on us.” Rodriguez and Cynthia, who were married from 2002 until their split in 2008, remain supportive co-parents and close friends.

Cynthia reflects on their plans for children, recalling, “He was eager to start a family right after we got married, but I wasn’t ready. I understood that a lot of the responsibility would rest with me because his commitments would take a toll.” Yet she admits, “He’s incredibly persuasive. When he sets his mind on something, there’s no changing it.” Despite the challenges, Rodriguez expresses that his daughters are the highlight of his life. “I aimed to do what my dad couldn’t—create a secure environment for my family,” he states. “Watching them grow has truly been the most fulfilling experience.”

The family was seen together at the premiere of “Alex vs. ARod” in New York, with Rodriguez’s girlfriend, Jaclyn Cordeiro, and retired quarterback Tom Brady also in attendance.

Episode 1 of “Alex vs. ARod” is set to debut on Thursday, November 6, with episodes two and three following on November 13 and 20, respectively.
