Alex Singleton Shines in Comeback After Cancer Diagnosis
In a remarkable return, Broncos linebacker Alex Singleton showcased his talent in his first game since revealing his testicular cancer diagnosis. During a tense moment in the “Sunday Night Football” clash against the Commanders, he made an impressive defensive move.
With the Broncos ahead 20-17 in the closing minutes, Washington’s quarterback, Marcus Mariota, attempted a long pass to Zach Ertz on a critical third-and-21 play. It looked like Ertz might secure the catch, but Singleton swooped in at the last moment, knocking the ball away and forcing a fourth down.
The crowd erupted as Singleton raised his arms in celebration, a moment of triumph considering his recent struggles. The Commanders had to punt, but they successfully tied the game, leading to overtime where the Broncos ultimately clinched the win through RJ Harvey’s five-yard touchdown run.
In overtime, Singleton continued to exert pressure on Washington, contributing to their efforts on defense. This return was especially poignant given he had recently undergone emergency surgery for cancer just three weeks prior. His earlier announcement about the diagnosis came as a shock, stemming from a routine NFL drug test that indicated signs of cancer.
“I’m thankful the cancer was detected early. The prognosis seems favorable for me and my family,” he shared at that time. “While we await further test results, we’re hopeful to see me back on the field soon.”
In a following interview, Singleton suggested his recovery would be quick. “I can’t pinpoint a timeline yet, but the surgery wasn’t too invasive, so I should bounce back relatively fast,” he noted. “I’m optimistic that it’s not going to take weeks and weeks for me to return, which is good.”
