Baseball Pitcher Alex Beshear’s Sentimental Glove Design
For Alex Beshear, baseball equipment has always revolved around gloves.
His fascination began in high school when he made a pact with his parents and saved money to get a Rawlings Primomit. “It was pretty pricey,” he quipped, “but it was a great glove.”
This enthusiasm intensified during college, where he was an under-the-radar left-handed pitcher who ended up being drafted from Division II Cal State East Bay.
Now, seven years into a successful major league career, Beshear’s personalized glove design has become a key element of his powerful presence on the mound.
“As a pitcher, you can’t go too flashy,” he explained. “You don’t have wristbands or arm guards; maybe a cool bat and some spikes.”
“But with gloves, we can add our own details. It makes it personal.”
This year, those personal touches carry even more significance.
During Friday night’s season debut broadcast on SportsNet LA, it was revealed that Beshear included meaningful elements in his gloves this season, following the tragic loss of his newborn daughter, Sterling Sol, last October.
On the thumb, “Sterling Sol” is embroidered in white cursive. Inside the pink-accented mitt, her birth date is stitched under the palm.
This decision was made alongside his wife, Kayla, as they embarked on their annual glove design process for the Marucci brand.
“Kay asked me, ‘Are you going to customize your gloves this year?’” Beshear recounted. “And I thought, ‘Yeah, we should definitely do something.’” It became a priority for them.
Before spring training started, they utilized the manufacturer’s online customization tool to bring their vision to life.
“It’s just – it’s really cool,” he said, glancing at one glove in his locker. “It’s something very personal to me.”
As he returned to play this week, marking his first game since missing the previous World Series, he has been met with overwhelming support from Dodgers fans, for which he has expressed deep gratitude throughout spring training.
When his name was announced during opening day, there was a roar in the crowd. He received a warm welcome again when he collected his championship ring the next day.
During his scoreless appearances on Friday and Saturday, fans showed their appreciation with hearty applause.
In response, Beshear would pat his chest, nod, or wave back, visibly thankful.
“I’ve been feeling the love this past week,” he shared. “I feel it. I hear it.”
However, the emotional journey remains complicated.
Each cheer serves as a reminder of his loss. Every mention of the team’s World Series victory brings him back to a moment filled with sorrow.
“I talked about that with Blake Treinen earlier,” he mentioned. “Yes, this is a special moment, but for Kay and me, it’s still a struggle.”
Kayla expressed similar feelings in an Instagram post, calling it “a very bittersweet first day.”
Yet, she highlighted how much the two treasured the brief time they had with their daughter.
“It was so heartwarming to share that memory with Sterling,” he reflected.
Now, armed with six new gloves in colors like baby blue and mint green, each featuring Kayla’s initial on the ring finger, he has a way to remember her with every pitch.
“It’s definitely a cool piece,” he said. “It means so much to me.”
A lifelong passion now offers him a small sense of comfort.
