Remembering a Tragic Loss
Most individuals prefer to forget the most challenging days of their lives. Yet, for Alex Beshear, those moments are intertwined with his heart.
Last October, Alex and his wife, Kayla, faced the heartbreaking loss of their newborn daughter. This tragedy led the Dodgers to miss out on the previous season’s World Series. So, when this year’s Opening Day rolled around, the Beshear family understood that portraying a different reality would be emotionally complicated.
Kayla attended the Dodgers’ season opener against the Diamondbacks and described her experience at the stadium in an Instagram post as “very bittersweet.” She voiced a poignant sentiment: “What would I give to have Sterling here?” adding, “I will always carry her in my heart.”
On November 7, the couple shared the devastating news of their baby, Sterling Bethea, who passed away on October 26. They expressed their grief, stating, “There are no words to express the pain we are experiencing.”
Every time Alex steps onto the mound, thoughts of Kayla and Sterling are with him. In his season debut, he pitched one inning during a 5-4 victory over the Diamondbacks, allowing one hit but no runs.
While his performance was notable, it was his gear that captured attention. Alex wore custom gloves featuring the name “Sterling Sol.” This personal touch was a visible tribute to his late daughter.
During spring training, Alex candidly shared their loss with the media, reflecting, “The lesson we learned from this is that life can change in an instant. Ten minutes was enough. Sterling Sol was the most beautiful girl in the world. We held her, changed her diaper, read to her, and loved her. Our time was far too short.” He emphasized their wish for privacy as they heal while navigating the baseball season.
The Dodgers are gearing up for their next game after the series against the Diamondbacks, with the first pitch set for 6:10 p.m. on Sunday.
