Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tops 2028 Democratic poll but is hesitant to commit

Ocasio-Cortez Keeps Options Open for 2028 Presidential Run

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is hinting at the possibility of a presidential bid in 2028, following a recent poll that places her as a frontrunner among potential Democratic candidates.

When approached by Fox News Digital about her interest in becoming the Democratic nominee for the upcoming election, she was somewhat evasive. “I’ve never really thought about anything past the midterms,” she stated. “I think I’m processing this just like everyone else.” It’s a modest response, maybe reflective of her current focus.

The conversation surrounding her candidacy was sparked, in part, by progressive House Democrats considering a range of options for the future, including a possible challenge to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer or securing another term in the House.

The University of New Hampshire Granite State Poll recently revealed that Ocasio-Cortez is the preferred choice among Democratic voters for the 2028 race. Although New Hampshire isn’t currently hosting an official Democratic presidential primary, it’s crucial for candidates as it often serves as an early gauge of voter sentiment.

However, Ocasio-Cortez opted not to comment directly on the polls that reflect a strong interest among voters for her leadership in the next electoral cycle. When asked about her standing, she emphasized, “We need to ask voters about that. I don’t have as much insight as they do.”

The poll indicates she is ahead of several notable figures, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and former Vice President Kamala Harris. Ocasio-Cortez’s approval rating among likely Democratic voters has climbed to 22%, a seven-point rise since February, putting her just ahead of Buttigieg and significantly ahead of Harris.

Interestingly, both Harris and Gov. Gavin Newsom appear to have dropped in popularity since the last survey, suggesting shifting dynamics within the party.

Ocasio-Cortez has endorsed a number of socialist candidates who managed to unseat incumbents in their primaries, and she is likely to receive backing from the Democratic Socialists of America in 2028. There’s currently a bit of tension within that group regarding potential endorsements, as some members suggest announcing support earlier than usual, given the party’s tendency to finalize such decisions at their national convention in the summer of 2027.
