Algerian boxer Imane Khelif dominates Thai opponent to advance to gold medal bout

Algeria’s Imane Kherif will fight for the gold medal after defeating Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapen by unanimous decision on Tuesday.

Kherif dominated Swannapheng throughout the bout, winning the first three rounds on points, until the final round, when Kherif punched Swannapheng in the face and the referee counted eight with the Algerian in his corner.

Now, this fighter will compete for a gold medal at the Paris Olympics.

The Arena Paris Nord crowd supported Khelif throughout the fight, and after the third round, Khelif and Suwannapheng embraced in the center of the ring.

The judges raised Kerif’s arm as the winner.

Kherif easily won her first two Olympic bouts, defeating Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori by unanimous decision and also beating Italy’s Angela Carini.

The boxer has been heavily criticised in the gender eligibility controversy that began with his disqualification from the 2023 International Boxing Association World Championships.

Kherif and the International Olympic Committee have maintained that Algerian Olympians are eligible to compete. “I am a woman,” Kherif declared after her win over Hamoli.

As a result of the loss, Suvarnapen will settle for the bronze medal, her first at the Olympics.

There is no room for competition for third place.
