Officer’s Death in Alhambra
First responders in Los Angeles County are grieving the loss of an Alhambra police officer who tragically died while on duty early Thursday morning after a police chase ended in a severe crash.
According to local reports, Officer Alec Sanders, just 28 years old, was working around 3 a.m. when officers from Alhambra engaged in a pursuit of an SUV carrying three suspects.
During the chase, the SUV collided with Sanders’ patrol vehicle. The impact was intense enough to eject a female suspect from the vehicle, resulting in her being pronounced dead at the scene.
Sanders’ patrol car was heavily damaged, with the front crumpled and the airbag deployed. He was discovered unconscious and not breathing inside his vehicle and was quickly transported about four miles to Los Angeles General Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Alhambra Police Chief Garrett Kennedy highlighted that Sanders had agreed to work the night shift for another officer that evening.
The department praised Sanders as a “dedicated public servant, trusted partner, and caring friend.”
“He was notable for his reliability and a strong sense of discipline in his professional and personal life. His impact on those he served with was profound,” the Alhambra Police Department stated on social media. “He answered the call to protect and serve with honor, integrity, and courage. His sacrifice will always be remembered.”
Sanders had joined the Alhambra Police Department in April 2025 after spending a year with the Long Beach Police Department.
A solemn procession escorted his body to the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office on Thursday.
Footage from local news showed many police officers in attendance, walking behind the van carrying his body, while additional first responders from various departments stood along the street outside the hospital to honor him.
Sanders is survived by his fiancée, his parents, and two younger brothers.
“Please keep his family, friends, and our department in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly tough time. We genuinely appreciate the immense support from our law enforcement partners and community members. We honor Officer Sanders’ life and legacy and thank you for standing with us,” the department added.
