Alicia Silverstone Discusses Her Break from Acting

Alicia Silverstone, known for her significant role in the 90s, stepped back from the limelight for a while. In a chat at the Televerse 2025 festival, she opened up about her choices and the time she spent away from acting.

“There was a phase when I just didn’t enjoy it,” she reflected, adding that she dedicated time to activism and wrote books like “Friendly Diets” and “Friendly Moms.” During that time, she also embraced motherhood after the birth of her son.

“I’ve been working quite a bit, but one day it hit me — I really love acting,” she admitted. Silverstone began exploring theater work, appearing in various Broadway productions.

Silverstone, who welcomed her son Bear Bull Jalecki with ex-husband Christopher Jalecki in 2011, contemplated writing more books. However, she confessed that balancing everything made it challenging.

She mentioned in a previous interview, “It was complicated, and I didn’t really know how to handle it. I lacked some foundational skills to navigate that era.” Back in the 90s, she was a prominent figure thanks to films like “Clueless” and the Aerosmith music videos, and was even in Batman and Robin.

However, she realized that not everything about the industry was what she’d envisioned. “At one point, it felt overwhelming,” she said, referring to her experiences during her rise to fame.

In a recent comment, Silverstone expressed how happy she was to have explored other interests beyond acting. “I went to Africa to support elephants and even visited Peru to aid the rainforest. It helped me find my voice in writing about health.” Her book A Friendly Meal marked the start of a new chapter for her.

Over the last decade, she hasn’t completely stepped away from acting, taking on roles that were reminiscent of her earlier persona, including parts in “Mismatch” and “Beauty Shop.” It seemed she needed a bit of a break to refocus.

“Before Clueless, I felt more intuitive and confident. After the film, things became a bit stressful,” she noted. It was crucial for her to take some time off, but her love for acting always pulled her back.

Silverstone recently mentioned that she feels like she is “doing life right.” Balancing her roles as an activist, mother, and actress isn’t always easy, but she strives to stay present in her son’s life while continuing to engage in important discussions about health and the planet.

Now, she’s back with a new series called Irish Blood, where she plays a divorce lawyer who travels to Ireland to uncover family secrets. “It’s a fun mystery with some great storytelling, and I think people will really enjoy it,” she said about her new project.

Silverstone is also set to reprise her role as Shell Horowitz in a follow-up series to Clueless, which has fans excited.
