An affidavit released Wednesday revealed that the architect of the 2021 Abbey Gate suicide bomber who killed 13 American service members in Afghanistan was released from prison just two weeks before the attack.
affidavit released by the Trump Department of Justice; It is listed Mohammad Sharihura was in an Afghan prison since about 2019, about two weeks before the attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport (HKIA) monastery.
The affidavit did not say which prison Sharihula was released. However, it is a widely known fact that around the time of his release and two weeks before the bombing, Taliban fighters took over a US base abandoned by the Biden administration and released thousands of prisoners.
New York Times This was reported on July 1, 2021 when the Biden administration ordered US troops to withdraw from Bagram on July 1, 2021.
Almost two weeks later, on August 26, 2021, a Sharihula-backed ISIS suicide bomber exploded an explosive device at Abbey Gate, killing 13 US troops, and dozens were allegedly involved in more messy evacuations after the Taliban blew seats in the country's capital, swaying into the US capital, and seized the US capital.
The affidavit says:
15. In an interview with FBI special agents after waived Miranda's rights around March 2, 2025, Sharihula said: Sharihula was in an Afghan prison from 2019 until about two weeks before the HKIA attack. Once Sharifullah released, ISIS-K members contacted Sharifullah to arrange support for future attacks.
16. ISIS-K members have provided Sharifullah to open motorcycles, mobile phone funds and SIM cards, and accounts to open accounts on certain social media platforms during attack operations. After preparing for these attacks, Sharifullah was tasked with scouting routes near Hkia for the attackers. Sharifullah monitored the route, specifically checking law enforcement and American or Taliban checkpoints. Sharifullah told other ISIS-K members that they believed the route was clear and that they didn't expect an attacker to be detected while they were following that route. The ISIS-K members then instructed Sharifullah to leave the area of Hkia. That same day, Sharihula learned of the attack at the HKIA above and recognized the bomber as an ISIS-K operative who knew while in prison.
The Biden administration has denounced a troublesome withdrawal from the Trump administration for signing an agreement with the Taliban, which set a date for the withdrawal of US troops. But Trump administration officials say the agreement has always been conditional and did not abandon Bagram.
Critics of the withdrawal on either side of the aisle refer to the withdrawal of US troops from Bagram Air Base as a key mistake that exacerbated the chaos and allowed the dangerous situation leading to bombing.
President Donald Trump announced the capture of Sharihula on Tuesday during his joint speech to Congress.
He was captured with the help of the Pakistani government and handed over to the US on Wednesday, where he is accused of providing and conspiring to provide material support and resources to designated foreign terrorist organizations that will lead to death.
