Allen Lazard’s journey to the NFL began eight years ago when he was on the Jaguars’ practice squad, trying to establish himself as an undrafted free agent. Back then, he assumed that someone other than Aaron Rodgers would be throwing him the ball.
Fast forward to today, and it’s clear why Lazard is still with the Jets while Rodgers has moved on to the Steelers. Lazard has a deep familiarity with both Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett, who was the offensive coordinator when they played together. There were rumors this offseason that Lazard might follow Rodgers to Pittsburgh, and the Jets even allowed his agents to explore trade options in March. However, nothing materialized.
Instead of heading to the Steelers, Lazard opted to stay with the Jets, albeit taking an $8.5 million pay cut for the final year of his contract.
“I think that’s pretty obvious,” he reflected during his first public remarks since the previous season. “My success isn’t determined by who is throwing the ball. It’s about the pride I take in wearing this jersey, representing this organization.”
Despite his experience in the league, Lazard’s impact in New York hasn’t been significant yet. He managed just 37 receptions for 510 yards last season. With a crowded receiver group including Josh Reynolds, Tyler Johnson, Arian Smith, and Xavier Gipson, securing a spot on the roster is no guarantee.
When he met with Coach Aaron Glenn, Lazard expressed his desire to remain a Jet, saying, “I’m here to continue my legacy and be part of something special. I may not have achieved all my goals recently, but that doesn’t change what I want to accomplish.”
In recent practices, the Jets have faced challenges, but Lazard mentioned that he is focusing on building his chemistry with quarterback Justin Fields and grasping the offensive terminology under coordinator Tanner Engstrand.
Fields commented on the developing connection, remarking, “He’s definitely someone who asks a lot of questions during meetings, showing he’s really engaged.”
Lazard praised Fields, saying, “He did an incredible job last year, and his mobility adds so much flexibility to our offense. It’s not just about his arm—he can throw downfield accurately too.”
As the practices continue, Lazard is committed to giving his all. “I’m just glad to still be a part of this new direction,” he said, looking forward to contributing positively to the team.
