Allen Lazard’s Status for Season Opener Against Steelers
Jets receiver Allen Lazard feels optimistic about his readiness for the opening game against the Steelers on September 7. After nearly two weeks of preparation, Lazard, an NFL veteran in his eighth year, said his injured right shoulder is feeling good. He even mentioned to his former team, the Packers, that he expects to be cleared for week one following an injury he sustained during his initial preseason game.
“Injuries are just part of the game—whether they happen during the season, in practice, or in games, it’s all part of it,” Lazard remarked prior to practice. “I’ve been concentrating on meetings and keeping pace with everything. I’m really looking forward to being back out there with everyone.”
There are speculations that the Jets might choose to manage his playing time carefully due to the injury. Lazard’s anticipated availability could lead to some intriguing decisions at the receiver position as roster cuts loom on Tuesday.
In training camp, Lazard, along with veterans Josh Reynolds and Tyler Johnson, showcased their skills and have emerged as candidates for the second receiver role alongside Garrett Wilson.
Meanwhile, with several names in the mix, this group and rookie Arianne Smith’s inclusion leaves one or two spots potentially open for players like Xavier Gipson, Malachi Corey, Brandon Smith, and Jamal Prickett.
Coach Aaron Glenn commented on the variety of skill sets available, noting, “We feel we can take many different skills from that room.” He also described Reynolds and Johnson as experienced players, highlighting Smith’s noticeable improvement in both route-running and hand skills.
Regarding his initial cuts as head coach, Glenn expressed, “It’s always a tough decision. But, well, they’re just in that position more often than not.”
Although standout cornerback Sauce Gardner (calf) was unable to practice, Glenn remains hopeful he will be ready to join the team for the season opener. Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor (knee) and guard John Simpson (back) were also absent from practice.
In a twist of optimism, along with Lazard and Gardner, Glenn mentioned that Taylor and running back Isaiah Davis (ankle) should also be available for action against the Steelers.
