Sometimes, discontent is hard to shake. America feels like it’s in decline. It’s transforming—some might say deteriorating—into something almost unrecognizable. The political landscape seems more about self-interest and plunder than genuine leadership. It’s tough to view the country without a heavy heart. Sure, Donald Trump may be shifting his strategy, but it’s as if something essential has been lost along the way.

On both sides of the political divide, there’s a voracious appetite for destruction. There’s this narrative that America has lost its greatness, that it might not even be worth saving. Some are calling for a radical overhaul, as if the path forward is to discard everything and start anew.

But, to be frank, I don’t agree.

No other nation has a constitution like ours. Few have enforced the rights of their citizens so explicitly. We cherish the freedom to express ourselves, the right to bear arms, and the pursuit of justice.

There’s also this entrepreneurial spirit in America, a willingness to take risks. In other cultures, such as Japan, failure can be seen as a personal shame, an embarrassment to family and society. Here, it’s almost celebrated. Little Timmy Rogers, at just eight years old, could risk his allowance to start a lemonade stand. Sure, his mom might be his only customer, but that’s not the point. He’s taking a chance, really putting himself out there.

Besides, look at our creative contributions. While there are many countries we might criticize, Americans have the unique ability to innovate. We’ve introduced a mix of things from sports to cinema that resonate globally. We’ve given the world iconic shows and personalities that reflect our culture.

America strikes a peculiar balance between the extraordinary and the mundane. Our society is filled with vibrant characters, not just a collection of stereotypes. We generate unique perspectives that can be both productive and unconventional. From startups in garages to groundbreaking ideas, there’s room for innovation.

And let’s not forget the countless individuals who truly keep our society running smoothly. It’s easy to reduce them to mere automatons in suits, but that’s not fair. Their contributions—wealth, kindness, and hard work—are vital. Without such qualities, the country might fall much further.

This July 4th, let’s remind ourselves of the positives about America. Yes, we face numerous challenges, and the outlook can seem grim. But wallowing in negativity won’t change that narrative. So, let’s take a cue from Toby Keith, crack open a cold one, and celebrate Independence Day like proud patriots. I appreciate America, imperfections and all.
