Nearly one in three Americans think they could pass for British based on their understanding of British culture.
Specifically, 27% believe they could do a credible British accent, while 26% admit they often find it hard to understand.
This week, former tennis player John Isner brought a slice of Wimbledon to New York with a food truck serving mini cheesecakes topped with strawberries and cream.
He mentioned, “Regarding British culture, it seems like Americans have picked up a thing or two. Today I’m querying New York City, ‘full of beans.’
A survey of 2,000 Americans revealed that 68% have never made the trip across the Atlantic, with 45% citing financial reasons as the main barrier to traveling to the UK.
This research was arranged by the All-England Lawn Tennis Club, which organizes the Wimbledon Championship. They’ll be screening matches from the Final Weekend in Brooklyn Bridge Park this weekend (July 11-13) and partnering with Isner for the cheesecake concept.
As part of the event, Isner interacted with locals to see how much they knew about British traditions.
According to the poll, nearly a quarter (24%) expressed a desire to witness the championship at Wimbledon if given the chance to fly over for the experience.
Sixty percent feel that the tournament is a grand slam unlike any other. Factors like the atmosphere (50%), the grass playing surface (46%), and its overall charm (36%) contribute to its uniqueness.
Isner shared, “Having played at Wimbledon, I can truly vouch for the championship’s special atmosphere.”
A representative for the Lawn Tennis Club stated, “This summer, we’re excited to bring the action, charm, and of course, strawberries and cream to New York’s skyline.”
Also, about 30% of those polled mentioned the allure of the iconic strawberries and cream available during the event.
Isner concluded, “Having so many fond memories from Wimbledon, it’s wonderful to let New Yorkers feel that magic in their own city this weekend at Brooklyn Bridge Park.”
The spokesperson reiterated, “Many Americans yearn to experience the championship, and we’re thrilled to share the event’s atmosphere and a taste of the UK with tennis enthusiasts in New York.”
