Almost half of Democrats say Biden should step aside in new poll

Nearly half of Democrats say President Biden should step aside and not accept his party’s nomination for November, according to a new poll.

in CBS News/YouGov Poll In a survey released Sunday, when asked whether Biden should be the presidential nominee, 45% of registered Democratic voters said he should step aside, while 55% said he should continue to run.

When asked whether Biden should run for president, 54% of Democrats said “yes,” down 10 points from the 64% of Democrats who said the same in a February 2024 poll. Similarly, 46% of Democrats said “he shouldn’t run,” up 10 points from February.

The poll came after Biden’s shaky performance in Thursday’s debate raised concerns among Democrats about whether he should continue to lead.

The White House and Biden’s campaign were united in trying to allay concerns by pointing out that he had a cold during the debate, and many supporters said Biden’s behavior and comments at subsequent events, including a post-debate viewing party and a rally in North Carolina, were evidence he simply had a bad night.

A majority of Democrats surveyed (59%) said when asked that Biden is in good enough mental and cognitive health to serve as president, a significant decrease from 71% just a few weeks ago (June 9, 2024).

The CBS News/YouGov poll was conducted June 28-29 among 1,130 voters and has a margin of error of +/- 4.2 percentage points. Among Democratic voters, the margin of error is +/- 6.8 percentage points.
