Prince George's County Mayor Angela Alsobrooks (Democrat) is leading former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan (R) in the state's closely watched Senate race. New poll found.
According to a poll conducted by Gonzales Research & Media Services, if the election were held today, Alsobrooks would lead with 46% of voters statewide to Hogan's 41%. Eleven percent of respondents said they were still undecided.
More than 70% of Democrats said they would support Alsobrooks, while 21% said they would vote for Hogan, while 82% of Republicans said they would support Hogan and only 5% supported Alsobrooks.
Hogan also has an advantage among independents, with 31% of them saying they would vote for Also-Brooks and 41% saying they would vote for the former governor. Twenty-eight percent of independents were undecided, according to the poll. First reported From The Washington Post.
The poll was conducted shortly after Also-Brooks delivered a prime-time speech at the Democratic National Convention last month.
Hogan, who was elected to two terms and was one of the most popular governors in the country, made the Senate race tight even as Democrats were winning the presidential race by about 20 points in opinion polls.
Hogan received a 50% favorability rating, even though only 41% said they would vote for him this fall.
Alsobrooks still faces a big gap in name recognition, with the survey showing that nearly all voters who said they were undecided said they didn't even know who Alsobrooks was.
Forty percent of voters had a favorable view of her, seven percent had an unfavorable view and 27 percent had a neutral view, while 34 percent said they did not know her name.
Meanwhile, only 1.6% of voters said they did not know Hogan's name.
Hogan maintained a neutral stance throughout his campaign, describing himself as “pro-life” on the issue, and drew the ire of former President Donald Trump when he said the conviction in his New York hush money case should be “respected.”
The poll found that only 54% of Republicans had a favorable view of Hogan, slightly ahead of independents (53%) and just 7 points ahead of Democrats (47%).
Alsobrooks holds a 4.3-point lead over Hogan, according to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ polling average.
The Maryland poll was conducted Aug. 24-30 among 820 voters and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
