Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has asked a New York trial court to postpone former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial for 30 days. President Trump could be indicted on charges of falsifying his business records.
Trump’s lawyers had asked for a 90-day delay to consider new documents recently submitted by federal prosecutors. Mr Bragg instead proposed a 30-day postponement.
of new york times report:
The Manhattan district attorney’s office, which accused Trump of covering up sex scandals during and after the 2016 presidential campaign, said the delay would give Trump’s lawyers time to examine the new records. . The agency had been searching for the records for more than a year, but only recently received them from federal prosecutors who investigated the hush-money payments at the center of the case several years ago.
Trump’s lawyers asked for the trial to be postponed for 90 days after tens of thousands of pages of new records were released. The former president has frequently requested such postponements, which are much more likely if prosecutors agree to them.
President Trump is not accused of “covering up a sex scandal,” but rather of falsifying business records related to payments to Stormy Daniels (née Stephanie Crawford) as part of a non-disclosure agreement before the 2016 presidential election. There is.
Mr. Bragg’s case involved a misdemeanor, so it could not be time-barred. But he is trying to circumvent the statute of limitations by bringing up federal campaign finance violations that were never charged by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) and charging them as felonies. Bragg’s request to delay the trial could reflect the weakness of the case, coming days after a Georgia judge dismissed some of the charges against Trump.
But a delay could also hurt Trump, moving the trial date closer to the presidential election and potentially shortening the appeal period.
Mr. Bragg’s case is widely considered the weakest of all the cases against Mr. Trump.
