Unexpected Canine Companion at Winter Olympics
On February 18, during the Winter Olympics, a dog made an unexpected appearance by darting onto the cross-country course, racing towards the finish line alongside the competitors.
This incident took place during the women’s team sprint qualifying at the Milan-Cortina Games. The audience reacted positively as the dog joyfully explored the venue, though the event itself wasn’t disrupted. Initial concerns from venue staff suggested someone may have broken the strict no-pet rule for attendees.
NBC Olympics shared the moment on social media, and the official timekeeper, Omega, captured the dog with a photofinishing camera. The clip quickly gained popularity online.
The spirited two-year-old Czechoslovakian wolfdog, named Nazgul after a character from the Lord of the Rings, had escaped from a nearby guesthouse where his owner resides. The owner, who requested anonymity due to the media attention, explained why the dog acted as he did.
“He was more vocal than usual that morning, probably because he was watching us leave. I think he just wanted to come along,” the owner relayed.
During the event, athlete Najiara Díaz Gonzalez from Argentina narrowly avoided colliding with Nazgul. “I watched it closely to see what it would do as I passed by, hoping not to hit the dog. Luckily, we both got through,” she shared.
Croatia’s Tena Hadzic conveyed to NPR that the encounter left her feeling unsettled. “I thought, ‘Am I seeing things?’ I wasn’t sure how to react since I didn’t know if it might bite,” the 21-year-old noted.
On a lighter note, Konstantina Charalampidou from Greece, who finished last in her heat, found humor in the situation. “It wasn’t my best race, but that moment distracted me. Now I guess I’m famous because of it,” she said, reflecting on the viral episode. This amusing incident brought to mind a similar event from the 2022 Alpine Ski World Cup in Bormio, Italy.
