Vermont Democrats Nominate Amanda Giannou to Challenge Governor Phil Scott

In Vermont, known for its strong Democratic leanings, the Democratic Party has introduced a new candidate in its ongoing efforts to unseat the popular Republican Governor, Phil Scott, for a sixth consecutive year. Amanda Giannou, an economist, emerged victorious in the primary against Allie Richards, a former CEO of a child advocacy group and recipient of support from past Democratic governors, Howard Dean and Madeline Kunin.

Governor Scott ran unopposed for the Republican nomination and is gearing up for his sixth two-year term. If he wins again, he will surpass Howard Dean to become the longest-serving governor in Vermont’s history. It’s worth noting that Vermont and New Hampshire are unique in the U.S. for electing their governors every two years.

Scott’s political stance is that of a moderate Republican, and he’s been critical of Donald Trump. He endorsed Nikki Haley during the recent Republican presidential primary and notably voted for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the last general election.

Winning against Scott will pose a significant challenge for Giannou in a state where Democrats generally have the upper hand in elections. In his 2024 re-election bid, Scott secured an impressive 73% of the vote, a slight increase from 69% in 2022.
