Amani Toomer explains why Sherrone Moore needed to leave.

Amani Toomer, a former University of Michigan wide receiver and longtime member of the Giants, recently shared his views on the unfolding scandals in college football. Following the firing of Michigan coach Sherone Moore, who was let go due to an alleged “inappropriate relationship” with a staff member—an incident that has seen her indicted on multiple charges—Toomer spoke about the situation.

“When the law gets involved like this, it’s tricky. Honestly, I prefer not to delve into it too deeply,” Toomer remarked. He emphasized that such circumstances tarnish the program’s reputation. He reflected on the pressure surrounding the decision to fire Moore. “It’s hard to say if he was a top pick for many Michigan alumni,” he noted. “The ethos here is that no one surpasses the team.” Toomer played for Michigan from 1992 to 1995 before being drafted by the Giants in 1996.

He added, “It’s all about the team. Regardless of your position, if you do something that casts the organization in a negative light, it can be damaging. I respect my coach and appreciate his flair, but, you know, you’re steering impressionable young people. These kinds of situations are regrettable, but it’s simply business.” He stated unequivocally, “You can’t harm the brand like this. The timing is, well, unfortunate, to say the least.”

Moore, who led the University of Michigan in 2024 and 2025, was dismissed before his surprising arrest. He currently faces charges including two misdemeanors for allegedly breaking into the home of executive assistant Paige Shiver while armed with a knife, plus a criminal trespass count for stalking.

In the wake of Moore’s exit, the No. 17 Wolverines will be under the guidance of interim coach Biff Poggi, who has been part of the program for eight years, as they prepare to face Texas in the Citrus Bowl on December 31.
