Amazon bringing Prime Air drones to Arizona city

Amazon plans to bring Prime Air delivery drones to new U.S. cities this year.

The tech giant on Monday identified the West Valley portion of Phoenix as the next U.S. city where it plans to deploy drones and their delivery services.

Amazon said it aims to roll out the technology to West Valley customers later this year.

First, the company needs approval from the Federal Aviation Administration and local governments. He said he was “currently working” with authorities on the matter.

The drone will take off from a property next to Tolleson’s same-day delivery hub, and is the “first time” it has been “fully integrated” into the company’s network, the company said.

Amazon also announced on Monday that it would cease operations at its drone facility in Rockford, California, beginning in 2022. The city, northeast of Stockton, will continue to allow other types of deliveries.

The company cited a strategy to “prioritize resources to continue growing the program” as the reason for the closure.

Meanwhile, Prime Air drone delivery remains available in College Station, Texas, and the company is looking to deliver to more locations in the U.S. next year.

Last fall, Amazon also announced that in addition to its new U.S. locations, it also wanted to offer drone delivery in Italy and the U.K. using MK30 drones.

Another major retailer, Walmart, is also working on its own drone delivery efforts. In January, the number of households eligible for service in the Dallas-Fort Worth area increased by 1.8 million.

The company also offers drone deliveries to ZIP codes in several other states, according to its website.
