Amazon cancels Sam Altman biopic — and everyone is curious about the reason

Amazon Withdraws from Sam Altman Biopic

Amazon has decided to step away from a nearly finished biopic about Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. This move raises some eyebrows, considering Altman’s significant influence in Silicon Valley.

The film, titled “Artificial,” starred Andrew Garfield as Altman and was reportedly close to completion. Initially set for a 2027 release, it has now been removed from Amazon’s schedule. The project will continue under a different studio, alongside actors like Ike Barinholtz, who plays Elon Musk.

Viewer Reactions

According to Variety, audience response during test screenings suggested mixed feelings about the characters; Altman and Musk were noted as the two least favored among viewers.

Some speculate that Amazon’s increasing partnership with OpenAI could be influencing their decision. Just earlier this year, OpenAI announced a significant collaboration with major players like SoftBank, NVIDIA, and Amazon.

Collaboration Details

This partnership involves assisting Amazon Web Services clients in developing AI applications that utilize OpenAI technology. The collaboration is aimed at enhancing customer support, sales operations, IT automation, and financial processes.

Interestingly, neither Amazon nor the filmmakers have explicitly linked the biopic’s cancellation to these business relationships. Instead, Amazon framed the withdrawal as a creative decision.

An Amazon spokesperson expressed their respect for director Luca Guadagnino, emphasizing their desire to maintain a strong working relationship.

The Future of ‘Artificial’

Amazon stated that they believe “Artificial” would be better served under a different studio and are actively collaborating with the filmmakers to find a new home.

Some online commentators mentioned Altman’s attendance at Jeff Bezos’ wedding last year, though there’s no concrete evidence connecting that to the decision at hand.

Barinholtz, while preparing for his role, took a more laid-back approach to interacting with Musk, revealing that he didn’t see a need to meet him ahead of filming.

Garfield expressed initial hesitance in taking on the role due to his previous portrayal of Eduardo Saverin in “The Social Network.” However, he ultimately found the chance to explore a different side of ambition intriguing.
