Amazon Prime Refunds: What You Need to Know

Millions of Amazon Prime users have already received holiday refunds, but you might still have a chance to get yours.

If you haven’t seen a settlement check yet, it’s worth checking whether you can file a claim.

Eligible customers can now submit claims under the company’s $2.5 billion agreement with the Federal Trade Commission.

This settlement includes $1 billion for civil penalties and $1.5 billion directed to eligible Prime subscribers, with individual payments capped at $51.

Amazon has faced accusations from the FTC regarding misleading practices that made it hard for customers to cancel their Prime memberships. The company has not admitted to these claims but hasn’t denied them either.

The first payments were sent out via email from November 12 to December 24, and customers could receive refunds through Venmo or PayPal.

If you missed the email, don’t lose hope. The FTC has indicated that checks will be mailed to the address associated with customers’ Prime accounts. The claim process began on Monday.

Eligible customers will receive notifications by January 23rd.

To qualify for a refund, you need to have unintentionally signed up for Prime or have attempted unsuccessfully to cancel between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025. You must also be a US Prime member and have utilized Prime benefits no more than three times within the year following your enrollment.

Importantly, the FTC has stated that they will not reach out to individuals about refunds, and they caution customers to be alert to potential scams. “The FTC is not contacting people about refunds in Amazon matters,” they note on their website, emphasizing that any phone calls claiming to be from the FTC are likely fraudulent.
