Amazon Introduces Faster Shipping Options

On Tuesday, Amazon shared its latest development: faster shipping for selected products in the U.S. This includes essentials like pantry items, clothing, over-the-counter medications, cleaning supplies, and electronics, though it comes at an extra cost.

Customers in over 2,000 locations—ranging from big cities to suburban areas—can now opt for three-hour delivery from a selection of about 90,000 fast-shipping items. For Amazon Prime members, the fee is $4.99, while non-members will be charged $14.99.

It’s interesting to note that one-hour delivery slots are available in numerous places, including major cities like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., as well as smaller towns like Des Moines and Boise.

Additionally, there’s a service for Prime members priced at $9.99, and it’s $19.99 for those who aren’t members. Amazon mentions that this express delivery option began testing late last year and has just expanded.

Udit Madan, Amazon’s senior VP of worldwide operations, commented on the launch, suggesting that the company saw a chance to utilize its delivery expertise to make life simpler for its customers—perhaps to create more value for Prime subscribers too.

Since its inception in 2005, the Prime program has evolved significantly. It started by offering free two-day delivery on about a million items, mostly DVDs and books. Now, Prime members have access to an impressive range of over 300 million items, with many options available for same-day or next-day delivery.

Amazon has implemented robotics and artificial intelligence to enhance order processing. They’ve also reorganized their U.S. delivery network into eight areas, which helps in streamlining delivery times.

There’s even talk of a new service aimed at delivering within 30 minutes, which, honestly, sounds incredible, if a bit daunting.

Currently, Amazon Now is being tested in various cities in India, Mexico, and the UAE, as well as in several communities in the U.S. and the U.K.

Interestingly, Walmart—Amazon’s competitor—has upped its game in speedy delivery as well, now offering same-day delivery within three hours to about 95% of the U.S. population, a significant increase from 76% just three years ago.
