Accusations Against Figure Skating Coach

Amber Glenn, an Olympic gold medalist, is facing troubling allegations against her former skating coach, Benjamin Schlotz. He is accused of committing sex crimes involving two of his former students, one of whom is underage.

On Wednesday, Schlotz, 47, was charged in Collins County, Texas, with sexual assault and indecent sexual touching of a child, as indicated by records from the jail.

The victims, referred to only as two athletes, reported Schlotz’s actions to local authorities, prompting an investigation that began on February 15, according to a report.

Details in the police report suggest that Schlotz had “inappropriate relationships” with both players, with one incident allegedly starting when the individual was still a minor.

Schlotz, a 30-year veteran of the North Texas skating scene, firmly denies the allegations. His attorney, Scott Edgett, stated, “For the past 30 years, Mr. Schlotz has been a well-respected figure skating coach/instructor in the local DFW community…” He also noted an intention to avoid media commentary in respect to the legal process.

Currently, Schlotz has been booked into jail with a bail set at $200,000. As part of his bond conditions, he is prohibited from teaching or coaching students.

Notably, Glenn has trained with Schlotz since she was just nine years old, often viewing him as a father figure in her skating journey. Reflecting on their relationship, she once said, “He’s like a dad or big brother in my rink and keeps me on track.” It’s an emotional connection that added depth to their training dynamic over the years.

After competing at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where Glenn earned a gold medal with Team USA, she is now under the guidance of coaches Damon Allen and Tammy Gambill. The timeline of her split from Schlotz remains uncertain.

The 26-year-old faced ups and downs during the Games, achieving a third-place finish in the women’s free skate division with a score of 138.62, even after placing 13th in the short program. Fellow American Alyssa Liu took home the gold, showcasing an impressive performance that earned her a season-high score.
