America First Takes Up Arms

Oh, it’s war again

Donald Trump has initiated a blockade on Venezuela’s oil exports, crucial for the financial survival of President Nicolas Maduro. Without funds flowing in, Maduro faces the risk of being removed from power. It’s an old principle: the people with the weapons need to be content to stay in control.

In essence, Trump is waging a form of war without using the actual term. Meanwhile, Senator John Fetterman showed his support for action against Maduro, yet he seems to be an outlier, with both parties in Congress voicing opposition to this new military stance.

At this point, it’s clear that Trump, along with Marco, JD, and Hegseth, should clearly articulate why this is beneficial for America. Personally, I’m not wholly anti-war, unlike many of my peers. But, I’m not convinced we’ll hear strong arguments anytime soon.

In Trump’s announcement, he barely made an effort to rationalize his decision. He mentioned “oil” multiple times, leaving it up to others to interpret. He also accused Venezuela of “stealing” from the U.S., likely referring to the nationalization of oil assets from 25 years ago.

One could argue that improving Venezuela’s economy and installing a favorable leader might positively affect American lives. Issues like illegal immigration, drug trafficking, and human trafficking impact us in ways that aren’t always visible until it’s too late. We notice when our communities suffer from drug-related deaths or when taxpayer-funded services are abused. It’s hard to ignore when you’re stuck waiting behind a few undocumented individuals in line at the store.

So, there might be a valid argument for a sort of trickle-down effect. A thriving Venezuela could actually reduce the number of migrants trying to cross into Texas or Arizona.

On the flip side, meddling in another nation’s government—even one as troublesome as Venezuela—could lead to unintended consequences. While Venezuela isn’t Libya, the international fallout can still be quite unpredictable.

I initially didn’t anticipate another ground war. The oil export restrictions could essentially cripple Maduro’s regime. But, as we know, situations can twist unexpectedly. Might countries that benefit from Maduro take action? That seems unlikely, yet it’s hard to say for sure.

Trump is set to speak to the nation tonight at 9 p.m. Before this announcement, his campaign had implied it would be something monumental, like Christmas or a major holiday.

But honestly, I’m not so sure about that anymore.
